Further Information
Designer Massimo Osti founded Stone Island in 1982 and the brand quickly became known for its innovative approach to fabrication through a range of dyeing techniques and surface treatments. Some of the more notable examples include Raso Gommato, Thermosensitive fabric, Rubber Wool and Reflective fabric.
Due to its visually striking and unique designs, Stone Island has attracted cult following from its early days. It was first adopted by the Paninaro youth in Milan in the 80s. In the 90s, British football fans, following their teams to European Cup games, started bringing back some of these same labels, notably Stone Island, to wear on terraces in the UK, appropriating the Paninaro look and building their own subculture around it. Through the years, the brand became an integral part of what is known as casual culture and in the last decade it was adopted in the modern American hip hop scene, once again establishing itself as a sub-cultural phenomenon. Regardless of its cult status, at the end of the day Stone Island is about boundary-pushing technology and innovative fabrics.
