Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is a state-of-the-art approach for in-depth analysis of fluid dynamics problems through numerical methods and algorithms. In AEE we are proud to offer our specialist services in CFD modeling tailor-made for HVAC and occupants comfort purposes.
Natural, Mechanical, and Mixed-mode Ventilation
With a CFD model we can reveal the details about the operation and efficiency of the ventilation system during the design phase. In the case of natural ventilation this means we can optimize the size and orientation of openings, the floor plan and interior space distribution. We can also analyze the air mixing and uniformity achieved by the proposed natural ventilation scheme and identify any dead spots or areas with very high air velocity. If mechanical ventilation is used, we can advise the preferred location of supply and exhaust air grills, which is especially important for HVAC design of large or specific use spaces such as theater halls, libraries and museums among others. Through CFD we can also compare the anticipated performance of multiple ventilation options and identify the most efficient scheme for the particular project. Moreover, CFD is an invaluable tool for design of mixed-mode ventilation where the integrated performance of all the parameters listed above must be assessed.
Site Ventilation
Another major use of computational fluid dynamics is air ventilation assessment (AVA) and pedestrian-level comfort. AEE provides AVA services compliant with the Hong Kong government requirements (House, Planning and Lands Bureau and Environment, Transport and Works Bureau). In the dense urban environment of large metropolises natural wind paths and available air ventilation at street level often suffer. The negative effects are even more prominent if the built environment is dominated by high-rise buildings. AEE performs a detailed assessment of the impact of the proposed development on the air ventilation in the project site and the surrounding areas. As a result we can provide added value advise on the proposed development massing, orientation, density and geometry in order to minimize the adverse effects on air ventilation and maximize the pedestrian comfort.
Other Applications
CFD models can also be applied to a number of engineering problems, such as cooling tower plume control – by modeling cooling towers under predominant wind conditions we can design appropriate wind protection devices in order to prevent the plume from reaching the building facade, nearby occupied open areas, or other sensitive receivers. Furthermore, our CFD capabilities are fully compliant with the LEED and BEAM Plus relevant credits requirements.
